Retired Air Force Officer to Run as Democrat in CD-5

  • by: Colorado Pols

It looks like there’s going to be a Democrat running in CD-5, and he seems to be serious. This press release for Jay Fawcett came to us from a communications/PR firm:

Retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and Desert Storm combat veteran, Jay Fawcett will announce his bid to be the first democrat to win the CD5 Congressional seat on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort at 8:00am. Mike Miles, former Army Ranger, Special Assistant to the Ambassador to Russia at the end of the Cold War and 2004 Senatorial candidate will introduce Fawcett…

…In an article in the Gazette Telegraph (Metro Section, Sept 12, 2005), Fawcett stated clearly that, “CD5 is ready for a change.” It appears the Colorado Democrat Party leaders and the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in Washington DC are believing it also. “The state of Colorado is demanding leadership that reflects their concerns. The fifth CD is no different. It is in the midst of great change,” states CDP Chair, Pat Waak.

Republicans shouldn’t be too worried about losing this seat because the voter registration advantage is still tough to overcome. But if any candidate is going to give the elephants a run for it in CD-5, a retired Air Force Lt. Colonel has the kind of background that might appeal to folks in El Paso County.

DEMOCRAT JAY FAWCETT TO ANNOUNCE BID FOR CD5

Colorado Springs, Colorado  Retired Air Force Lt. Colonel and Desert Storm combat veteran, Jay Fawcett will announce his bid to be the first democrat to win the CD5 Congressional seat on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort at 8:00am. Mike Miles, former Army Ranger, Special Assistant to the Ambassador to Russia at the end of the Cold War and 2004 Senatorial candidate will introduce Fawcett.

Fawcett will also announce his candidacy at the South Central Counties Democratic Party meeting on October 1, 2005 in Buena Vista, Colorado. He will be introduced by Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party.

In an article in the Gazette Telegraph (Metro Section, Sept 12, 2005), Fawcett stated clearly that, “CD5 is ready for a change.” It appears the Colorado Democrat Party leaders and the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) in Washington DC are believing it also. “The state of Colorado is demanding leadership that reflects their concerns. The fifth CD is no different. It is in the midst of great change,” states CDP Chair, Pat Waak

Fawcett has been meeting with political leaders since January 2005.  He is gaining support, not only in Colorado, but on a national basis as well.  According to the DCCC there are six to nine possible Iraq war vets who will be running for federal office across America in the 2006 election cycle.  These candidates will be national news.

Fawcett makes no bones that his experience as a combat vet, Air Force Academy professor, military advisor, small business owner, husband and farther uniquely puts him ahead of the field in experience to lead this district.  “In a time when the cold war is over and we are engaged in a war on global terrorism, people are questioning what our plan for the future will be and our current leadership is not providing the answers” states Fawcett. “El Paso county is not a bastion of the far right…they are just a very vocal piece of the north end of a district that has over 600,000 constituents, including the fourth largest concentration of veterans and over 123,000 unaffiliated voters.”

The continued driving force of the Democratic Party in Colorado has been impressive.  The positive results of Congressman John Salazar in CD3, US Senator Ken Salazar and the take over of the state legislature in the 2004 election, has given new life to the party.

www.Fawcett4Congress.com will also launch on the morning of September 27, 2005

  1. Marshall,

Why do you use Jesus for political gain?  Where in the Bible does it say that Jesus’ name should be used in such a manner?  Just wondering?

As for Fawcett, I think he has an uphill battle.  If Joel runs again he will be a lock for the seat because of his work on behalf of the military, not only in the Springs, but accross the country.  If Joel does not run, it will make the race slightly mor competative, but the voter registration in the 5th CD as of August is 183,214 R, 123,933 U, and 86,567 D.  Those registration numbers mean that there is almost 20,000 more R’s in the the 5th than there are D’s in the 1st CD.

The numbers don’t lie and as bad as the Democrats would like to win in Colorado Springs I just don’t see how it is going to happen.

  2. First – it was a just a question with no political motivation except I am sick of seeing good veterans like Fawcett get smeared.  And just as I figured the post right after it is classic swift boat strategy.

Second – Am I seriously getting lectured from a Republican about not using Jesus for political gain?  When the Republican party stops using the sanctuary of God to hold justice sundays then you can get back to me on that one.

The Republican chickenhawks are going to try to smear another honorable Vet.  Don’t take it laying down Fawcett.

  3. hey, if this guy can help strip GOoP voters away in his race, and then in the Govs race, I say mission accomplished.  Getting El Paso’s margains out of the 70-30 range to the 60-40 range would be quite helpful for Ritter, or whomever the Dem Gov candidate ends up being.

Not sure if coat tails go that way.

  4. They can, Pacified.

Damn straight, Marshall.  Just remember that its patriotic for chicken hawks to smear vets if they waive the flag while doing it, and Jesus is a Republican

  5. ‘Bout time ColoradoPols reported on this. The man only entered the race a month ago, and I know I have mentioned it twice on here since then.
And even after aboe story, the CD-5 Line has not been changed.

  6. Marshall,

The post linked to a letter questioning if Fawcett did a far search of the facts before accusing Hefley of keeping him of the Visitor’s Board.  Are you saying that we cannot ask questions of veterans?  If not, the Dems did a lousy job when it came to Bob Dole.

“Am I seriously getting lectured from a Republican about not using Jesus for political gain? When the Republican party stops using the sanctuary of God to hold justice Sundays then you can get back to me on that one.”

Excuse me?  I think I remember Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Sharpton, Jackson, and so many other Dems preach from the pulpit of churches in an effort to sway votes.

Also, I didn’t say that Jesus couldn’t be used in politics in a positive manner; I think he should not be use in a negative connotation by Republicans or Democrats.  God doesn’t fit into the boxesthat men make. he is not a Democrat or a Republican.

Finally, you can call Republicans chickenhawks if it makes you feel good, but it makes you look bitter.

  7. An open race against a half plausible Democrat with a bit of fight in him will at least drain coffers from Colorado Republicans other races in the state.  Real fights in places like the 4th and 5th CDs that the GOP should be able to take for granted steal resources from fights in places like the 3rd and 7th CDs where the GOP should be fighting real battles.

  8. Jonathan,

Let’s recap something here.  Gore may have just been a journalist in Vietnam, but he was in Vietnam, Kerry was in Vietnam, which is much more than I can say about Bush, who supported that war but didn’t want to fight in it.  Same thing with Cheney,DeLay et. al.  Clinton didn’t fight either, but he didn’t support it.  But my point is, where were all these pro-war politicians when they were called to serve?  They didn’t go to Vietnam, and now, a generation later there are many conservatives that are pro-Iraq War, but they would never serve, nor ask their children to serve.  In my book, that makes them chickenhawks.  Jonathan, if you belive in this war, why are you here posting on a blog and not over there fighting for your country?

As for preaching, I have never heard Dems preaching and utilizing churches or a religious base the way the Republicans have done for the last 5 years.  Nor have I seen the Dems trying to ram it down our throats the way the Repubs do.

Furthermore, we did not go after Dole the way the Repubs went after Kerry.  We did not lie about his record and we did not make his record a centerpiece of the campaign the way you did to Kerry, Cleland and even McCain.

  9. Dan, my guess is the reason they dont put up a dem in the CD5 line is that they are realists, at least to some degree.  Those #’s should be enough to keep a D from even daydreaming about it.

On a lighter note, is Sir Robin and Peter the same person? Same writing style, same verbiage, pretty much every thought is the same except I noticed they interact on occasion.

  10. Actually I was talking with Athena the other day and she said that she was very upset with how the Republican party is giving tax cuts to the rich while she is fighting wars without adequate supplies.  She also said that reserves is being broken and it seems the Republicans could care less along with that idiot Rumsfeld she is forced to work with.  She would like a party would put the proper planning in place before starting a war like Democrats showed worked in the war in Yugoslavia where no American soldiers were lost in combat.

  11. Hey “Manofthehour” (What a name!)- “Same writing style, same verbiage, every thought the same” WOW Do you read this post? You’re certainly not an English teacher! We’re not one person, we are Billions.

  12. Paging Dr. Mengele

The Environmental Protection Agency’s new rules on human testing, which the agency said last week would “categorically” protect children and pregnant women from pesticide testing, include numerous exemptions — including one that specifically allows testing of children who have been “abused and neglected” . . .

In unveiling the new rules last week, the EPA promised full protection for those most at risk of unethical testing . . . But within the 30 pages of rules are clear-cut exceptions that permit:

Testing of “abused or neglected” children without permission from parents or guardians!

“Ethically deficient” human research if it is considered crucial to “protect public health.”

More than minimal health risk to a subject if there is a “direct benefit” to the child being tested, and the parents or guardians agree.

EPA acceptance of overseas industry studies, which are often performed in countries that have minimal or no ethical standards for testing, as long as the tests are not done directly for the EPA.

The EPA provided little clarification yesterday in response to questions about the exemptions.

Only under this fascist Bush Presidency. What hack was appointed to head this government agency. Some friends roommate. Collegiate frat boy elitist nonintellect ….WORST PRESIDENT EVER!

  13. Robin/Peter,

You cannot defend your position so you use an ad homnem attack.  You lose credibility every time you attack the person instead of debating the issue.

    unnamed,

You are right, you can name hundreds of Republicans who did not fight in the military but are now elected officials that support the war on terror and the war in Iraq.  But they were elected by the people to represent us in Congress and the White House.  You may not like it but Bush was elected to be president and he has to make tough decisions that a lot of people will not agree with.  As for me, I applied twice to become an officer in the Naval Reserve, but was turned down because of a medical condition.

As for not hearing Dems preach, I think you should pay closer attention to the news because they reported Kerry, Edwards, and the crew every time they preached from the pulpit.  As for the Republicans and Christianity, they teamed a lot longer than 5 years ago.  When the Republican Party started, it was formed by abolitionist Christians to opposed the Democrats in the South.  It should stand to reason that they continue to woo the majority of Christians in the US because they have remained focused on  traditional values.

Finally, Dole was attacked by the Dems for being divorced, accused of election fraud, for being too old, and laundering campaign contributions lying the whole way.

  14. The question I originally asked had nothing to do with which political party Jesus would be apart of.  I simply asked Who Would Jesus Smear.  This can obviously cut both ways.  Jonathan immediately took it as a political attack on Republicans.  I think this passage might give us a clue why.

    Book of Matthew
    Chapter 7

    7:1
Judge not, that ye be not judged.
    7:2
For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.
    7:3
And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?
    7:4
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?
    7:5
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

There is more good stuff here, go read the Good Book yourself.

  15. Why can’t liberals stay on message? This site used to be about inside Colorado politics. Now its Bible study.

Why does marshall’s last post read like Peter/Robin?

Its too bad. Maybe Jody Stoggoff would be interested in starting a blog over at the Statesman.

  16. Again with this chickenhawk nonsense.  That is such a dishonest “argument” it can be taken down in so many ways.

So, only people who join the military can support a particular war? Guess FDR had no right to send our boys over to France then, did he?  Yes, the President was in the Air National Guard.  So was Dick Gephardt (war supporter).  Senator McCain has unquestionable combat credentials (war supporter).  Plenty of people on both sides of the argument, some who’ve been in combat, some who haven’t.

How about this: You are opposed to regime change? Okay, you should have to live in Hussein’s Iraq.  Maybe you’ll wind up in his prison.  Maybe you or your wife/sister/daughter will find herself in one of the state-sanctioned “rape rooms.”  Maybe one of Saddams charming sons will feed you alive to some zoo animals.  But hey, that’s the price of standing on principle.

What’s that, Micheal Moore, you support the “Iraqi Freedom Fighters” killing our troops and their countrymen? Well, how come your fat ass isn’t over there signing up for the mujahedeen? Oh, you have a condo board meeting tomorrow night.  Sorry.

Anyone who opposes school vouchers can not, in good conscience, send their kids to private schools.  Anyone who opposes drilling in ANWR should be required to live in northern alaska.

    Get it?

  19. We’re not going to stop you from talking about whatever you’d like, but please be courteous in doing it in the correct post. There is no reason to post a long comment about the environment in a post about a candidate in CD-5. Save that for the open thread, please.

  20. Newsflash Colonel:

If you want to try and win in CD5, you should not immediatly poison your campaign by attaching yourself to Mike Miles.  Immpressive military record though he might have, he’s regarded among moderate voters as a friggen’ left wing cook.  I don’t really think he’s a cook, but he is very left-leaning.  His supporters however, are wastoid cooks, so be careful.  Use a moderate, independent message PLEASE… don’t get grouped in with the be-the-changers.

  21. RZA:

    A.  As shown by the primary results last year, most folks don’t have a clue at all who Mike Miles is, so it won’t matter in the general election.

    B.  I’m not sure Miles’ culinary skills are an issue here (or even their supporters).  I mean, sure, Mike can make a mean gumbo — and his crabcake is to die for — but I don’t think that makes him a left wing cook.  In fact, I think when he cooks chicken or turkey, he prefers that both of the wings be well-cooked.

  22. Well done, Springs Dem.  I stand corrected.  Be-the-changers are “Kooks”.  They’re pretty good at “cooking up” unneeded problems for the party, though.  Perhaps I should have called them “Waak-Os”

  23. Marshall,

“This can obviously cut both ways. Jonathan immediately took it as a political attack on Republicans.”

If you didn’t mean this as an attack on Republicans then who was it directed toward?

I think your selection from Matthew is a poor choice, even though it is a great passage, it doesn’t make much sense given the agruement.  I wasn’t judging anyone, just stating my opinion.

Thanks for encouraging me to read the Bible, I try to do it on a daily basis in conjunction with listening to it on CD.  I encourage you to read it daily also.

  24. I love the fact that Dems (basically you, Marshall) are talking about R’s ramming Jesus and God down everyone’s throat, but you are the only thumper posting scripture on the thread.  This isn’t a religious thread, STFU all of you.  If any of you idiots needs a book written 2000 years ago to tell you what is right and wrong, do me a favor: close your garage door, run a hose from your exhaust pipe into your open car-window, and start revving the engine.

As far as the subject of this thread, I have only one question… Anyone remember what happened to a guy named Wesley Clark when he tried to run as a Dem on his service jacket?  Nothing good.  That ploy might work up here in Denver, maybe even for a state-wide seat, but not in Springs.  What a waste.

  25. YouPeopleAreStupid,

Wow, you don’t like people who read the Bible, so you think we all should kill ourselves?  Kind of sounds like Hitler’s philophosphy with the Jews.

Just because you don’t agree, you shouldn’t wish us dead.  (remember liberals are supposed to be tolerant)

  26. West Clark?  How about Paul Hackett, who in a short race came within 4 pts of taking a Republican District with better numbers than CD5, and is now taking a swing at the US Senate.

Be careful Republicans.  Dems are 82,000 strong, but we independents are 123,000 and growing! We vote our pocketbook and we make up our minds, not lead by either parties rhetoric. We vote for intelligent, thinking people.  Not religious fanatics, not save tree frogs and not a party that appears to have ignored the poor, the black, the elderly and babies in the face of a national disaster, can?t seem to give any real leadership to the appropriate use of America?s military and can?t find a 6?6? man in the caves of Afghanistan!

    Just a thought!

  27. West Clark?  How about Paul Hackett, who in a short race came within 4 pts of taking a Republican District with better numbers than CD5, and is now taking a swing at the US Senate.

    Just a thought!

  28. Marshall,
Glad to see that a lib out there has finally started to read the Bible.  Given that, what do you think about Jesus when he went into the temple and started whipping people?  Do you think that maybe you underestimate God’s sense of justice because it suits your life view?

Now about CD5.  I think it is good that a dem is out there.  It is always good to stir up some competition so as to keep the best person in office.  I think there has been so little competition in this district for so long that it has enabled the incumbent to not fight for his job and be as effective in congress as he could be.  Viva la competition!!!

  29. Political Independence,

I don’t kno where you got your numbers but Joel’s seat is one of the top 10 safest seats in the US while OH2 is 57th.  While a far cry from being competitive, it is still more in play than CO CD5.  Further, Fawcett will have a fundraising hurdle to overcome while the Republican candidate will not only have an easier time raising funds they will also have an enormous grassroots

This race is no different than a Republican running in CD1, the numbers are too great to overcome.

P.S. you don’t seem too independent to me.

  30. Uh, Shamus, you obviously didn’t understand the tongue-in-cheek nature of my post.  I thought it was pretty clear.

Plenty of people who have been to war support the invasion of Iraq.  Plenty of people who have never worn the uniform support the war in Iraq.  Plenty of people who have been to war opposed the invasion.  Plenty of people who have never been to war opposed the invasion.

Can I be any more clear? They are called “arguments” and they should be taken on their own merits.

I won’t go to Pyongyang the same way you wouldn’t to to Iraq when Saddam was in charge.

When Clinton ordered any of the troop deployments in the 90s you didn’t see me screaming “Chickenhawk! Why doesn’t he send that daughter of his off to war!”

  31. PS  the funny exchange about “left wing cooks”
almost redeems the cut and paste idiocies.
If we can’t laugh at our typeaux, what can we laugh at? Hooray for Springsdem and RZA!

  32. Folks,

No where in the Bible does it say that Jesus whipped the money changers (Matthew 21:12).  It says that He drove them out and overturned their tables.

I think we should get back to politics.
